FAQ
WHAT DO YOUR GRANTS COVER?
Currently our grants cover top surgery and HRT. In time, we will cover more surgeries and even assist with name and gender marker changes.
WHEN ARE APPLICATIONS OPEN?
Applications are open every year November 1st to December 31st.
WHEN ARE GRANTS AWARDED?
Grants are awarded early in the year, usually January or February.

For example, if you apply for a grant in December 2019, that grant will be awarded early 2020.
WILL I BE NOTIFIED IF I DO NOT GET A GRANT?
Due to the amount of applications received, we can not notify every applicant. Only those who are receiving a grant or about who's application we have questions, will be emailed.
WHY DO I HAVE TO HAVE $1,000 SAVED TO APPLY?
We want to make sure that the person receiving the grant can actually use the grant. Even if an applicant receives a grant in which the surgery fee has been waved there is still often hospital fees, anesthesia fees, travel costs, and the need to pay bills while taking time off work to recover, among other often forgotten surgery related costs. While we know $1,000 won’t cover all that, it’s a start. We want to make sure that the person receiving the grant can actually use the grant.
WHO CAN APPLY FOR A GRANT?
You can apply for a grant if you:
Identify somewhere on the transgender spectrum
Live in Canada, the United States, or Mexico
Will be 18 by the time of surgery

Additional requirements are listed below. These have changed every year based on the needs we see so please check back every year prior to applying. Failure to comply with these requirements will result in being disqualified for a grant.
ARE NON-BINARY PEOPLE ABLE TO APPLY?
Absolutely! Anyone on the transgender spectrum can apply. This includes those who are non-binary, bigender, agender, genderfluid, genderqueer, etc. Basically if you aren't cis you can apply!
HOW ARE GRANT RECIPIENTS PICKED?
Grant recipients are picked by random selection. People are selected at random to make sure everyone has an equal opportunity at receiving a grant.
CAN I APPLY IF I NEED HELP PAYING FOR A SURGERY I ALREADY HAD?
No. Genderbands grants do not reimburse for past surgeries.
DO YOU COVER REVISIONS?
No Genderbands grants do not pay for revisions.
"I'M NON-BINARY AND WOULD LIKE A REDUCTION INSTEAD OF A FULL MASTECTOMY. WILL YOUR GRANTS COVER THIS?"
Yes! The Genderbands grants will cover reductions for trans people. Transitions are not one size fits all. Its about what works for you.
Please carefully read the applications for our partnership grants as they may have an exclusive for this surgery.
CAN I APPLY TO MORE THAN ONE GRANT?
Yes! You may apply to more than one grant however you may only receive one grant.
