Transition Grant applications are open every year from October 1 to November 30. Applications will appear on the website October 1.

In addition to surgery, covered expenses may include anesthesia, hospital fees, medications administered by the surgical facility as part of the surgical process, and pathology fees.

Travel

Travel grant funds may be used for expenses related to travel for gender-affirming healthcare for the patient and/or travel for one caregiver. 

 

Qualifying expenses related to travel for any gender-affirming surgery include but are not limited to:

Airfare

Hotel

Car rental

 

*Meals during travel are not a qualifying expense.

*Travel grants for youth may be used for any gender-affirming medical or surgical healthcare, including but not limited to puberty blockers and/or HRT.

REQUIREMENTS

Grants are now open to ALL transition-related procedures!

  • New application dates! October 1 through November 30.

  • There is no longer a savings requirement.

  • Applicants must be on the transgender/non-binary spectrum.

  • Applicants must reside in the US, US territories, Canada, or Mexico.

  • ​Applicants for surgical or medical procedures can be under 18 at the time of application BUT must be 18 or older at the time of receiving surgical or medical procedures.

  • Non-surgical and non-medical grants are available to those under 18 years old (with parental/guardian consent).

  • Grant selectees must use the grant within the calendar year it was awarded.

  • Surgical and medical grants must be used in the United States.

  • A therapist's letter is required for surgical and medical grants before funds can be dispersed (a federal requirement).

  • Grants require proof of residency for qualifying locations. Proof of residency is not required at the time of application, but is required before grants are awarded.

Applications are next open October 1, 2025 to November 30, 2025

Please note the type, quantity, and dollar amount of grants offered changes every year depending on fundraising throughout that year.

You can apply to multiple grants but can only receive one grant. Do not apply to the same grant more than once. We highly recommend filling out the application on a computer, not a mobile device.

FAQ - TRANSITION GRANTS

WHAT DO YOUR GRANTS COVER?

. Grants are for any transition-related procedures! Grants can be used for Social, Surgical, and Medical Transition, and Travel related to transition procedures. Some examples of transition care include but are not limited to: -Gender-Affirming Clothing and Haircuts -Name and Gender Marker Change -Corrected Vital Records -Electrolysis and/or Laser Hair Removal -Speech therapy -Top Surgery (including reductions and augmentation) -Bottom Surgery -Facial Feminization Surgery -HRT -Hysterectomy -Airfare Expenses (travel grants) -Hotel Expenses (travel grants) -Car Rental (travel grants) -And More!

WHEN ARE TRANSITION GRANT APPLICATIONS OPEN?

. Applications are open every year from October 1 to November 30.

WHEN ARE GRANTS AWARDED?

. Grant applications are open in the Fall, with grants being awarded early the following year (usually around late February).

WILL I BE NOTIFIED IF I DO NOT GET A GRANT?

. Due to the amount of applications received, we cannot notify every applicant. Only those who are receiving a grant or about whose application we have questions will be emailed.

WHO CAN APPLY FOR A GRANT?

. ​You can apply for a grant if you: - Identify somewhere on the transgender/nonbinary spectrum. - Live in Canada, the United States, US Territories, or Mexico - Will be 18 by the time of treatment: if under 18, see the section on what grants are available to you. Additional requirements are listed in the Requirements section above. These have changed every year based on the needs we see so please check back every year prior to applying. Failure to comply with these requirements will result in being disqualified for a grant.

ARE NON-BINARY PEOPLE ABLE TO APPLY?

. Absolutely! Anyone on the transgender spectrum can apply. This includes those who are non-binary, bigender, agender, genderfluid, genderqueer, etc. Basically if you aren't cis you can apply!

HOW ARE GRANT SELECTEES PICKED?

. Folx are selected at random to make sure everyone has an equal opportunity at receiving a grant.

CAN I APPLY IF I NEED HELP PAYING FOR A TRANSITION TREATMENT I ALREADY HAD?

. No. Genderbands grants do not reimburse for past treatments.

DO YOU COVER REVISIONS?

. No Genderbands grants do not pay for revisions.

"I'M NON-BINARY AND WOULD LIKE A REDUCTION INSTEAD OF A FULL MASTECTOMY. WILL YOUR GRANTS COVER THIS?"

. Yes! The Genderbands grants will cover reductions for trans people. Transitions are not one size fits all. It's about what works for you.  Please carefully read the applications for our partnership grants as they may have an exclusive rule for what surgeries and treatments they're providing.

"I'M UNDER 18, AM I ELIGIBLE FOR ANY GRANTS?"

. There are some grants available to minority age applicants, provided that they have parental or guardian consent.  Examples of these are:​​ - Gender-affirming clothing and haircuts. - Name and gender marker change. - Corrected vital records. - Travel for gender-affirming healthcare. *Travel grants for youth may be used for any gender-affirming medical or surgical healthcare, including but not limited to puberty blockers and/or HRT.

CAN I APPLY TO MORE THAN ONE GRANT?

. Yes! You may apply to more than one grant however you may only receive one grant. MORE INFORMATION COMING.

IF I HAVE RECEIEVED A TRANSITION GRANT IN THE PAST, CAN I GET ANOTHER ONE?

. Medical grant recipients are disqualified from applying for all future Genderbands medical grants. Surgical grant recipients are disqualified from applying for all future Genderbands surgical grants. Social transition grant recipients are disqualified from applying for all future Genderbands social transition grants. You may apply for a grant in a different category than the one you received. For example, if you received a surgical grant you may apply for a social grant.

WHAT DO THE GRANTS NOT COVER?

. Grant funds will not be disbursed for reimbursement of past procedures, revisions, prerequisite treatments in preparation for gender-affirming surgery, income reimbursement for time off work, surgical aftercare supplies, medications or treatments. Other expenses may also be excluded.

WHAT TRANSITION GRANTS WILL BE OFFERED THIS YEAR?

. The monetary amount, quantity, and type of grants offered every year changes. What we can offer is dependant on fundraising during the year. Selling merchandise at Pride events and our online store, taking donations and sponsors, and forming partnerships all help fund Genderbands Transition Grants.

"WHAT'S UP WITH THE SIGNED FLAGS?"

. We take trans pride flags to pride events to be signed by anyone who gives a donation or just wants to show support. These flags are given to Genderbands grant recipients as a way of showing them how many people care about them. All of those people on the flags literally helped the grant recipient get their live-saving procedure!
